Brother was the “sophisticate” of the family and chose Lesley for Carol because it was small and he thought Carol would like Cambridge (he attended Harvard).

“I did not necessarily want to become a teacher…Of course occupations were limited in those days for women…In those days your options were, with notable exceptions of course…You were a nurse, you were a teacher, you were a stewardess --not a flight attendant, and of course you could always be a salesperson.” She became the first female radio news director in the country. "…So a teaching degree was considered a good asset for a young woman. The phrase was, “to fall back on” …in leu of a man supporting you, which was the profession most women sought in those days, although I’ve got to say from the get go I was a maverick. I never thought of that as something to aspire to I terms of support."
